Modavigil®

Modavigil®

·          MODAVIGIL is used to improve wakefulness in people with excessive daytime sleepiness associated with the medical condition known as narcolepsy.  In narcolepsy, there is a sudden and irresistible tendency to fall asleep during normal waking hours.  This happens at unpredictable times, even when it is inappropriate or unsafe to do so.  MODAVIGIL allows patients to stay awake and alert when they need to be, without interfering with sleep and when sleep is desired.  Some of the important symptoms include:

o         Cataplexy

o         Sleep paralysis

o         Hyponagogic hallucinations

o         Automatic behaviors

o         Disrupted night sleep

·          Precisely how MODAVIGIL works is not known, but it is known that it acts on the central nervous system, working selectively through the sleep/wake to activate the cortex of the brain.  It differs from other stimulant medicines that promote wakefulness.  MODAVIGIL increases wakefulness.  Unlike stimulants it does not over stimulate or produce a ‘high feeling’.

·          MODAVIGIL is the first in a new class of wake-promoting medicines.  MODAVIGIL is chemically unrelated to CNS stimulants.  MODAVIGIL® has a low abuse potential and after nearly 10 years use internationally it has demonstrated a good safety profile.
